So I’ve realized that Spice and Wolf isn’t about economs, or a pagan wolfgod trying to find her ancestral homeland, or a merchant trying to do whatever it is that he’s trying to do; it’s about a high school couple going to college.

See, season one of Spice and Wolf was high school. Lawrence and Horo were hanging out and doing stuff together, and no one ever really bugged them. They might not have considered themselves to be an “item”, but everyone figured they were since they do eeeeeeeverything together.

Then, along comes season two. They’re in a new city that’s partying, everyone’s drinking beer, and everyone’s just partying.

And then there’s Amati.

See, Horo met Amati and was like, “Hello, Sir Amati.  ‘Tis a pleasure to meet you.”  And Amati, all hormonal like a college kid, goes, “Prithee, my fair lady!  Doth thou needeth thee a knight?”  And Horo’s like, “Oh, that’s so sweet. <^.^>”  And then Amati’s like, “Thou shallt be mine!”  Then Lawrence is like, “Whoa, you did not just go there, bro.”  And Amati’s like, “Oh, I went there.”  Then Lawrence is like, “You better step off, son.”  And Amati’s like, “Bring it, old man.”  Then Lawrence is like, “Oh, it will be broughtted.”  While this is going on, everyone else is drinking beer going, “WHOOOOO!  FIGHT!”

See?  Just like college.

This week’s episode is very touching, because it manages to show us individual suffering and how people are able to deal with it. It almost moved me to tears.

On their journey homeward Mirai, Yuuki and Mari come by Mirai’s school. Mirai has the strange perceptional experience that you don’t really recognize a well known place, when it is used in a different fashion and is crowded with unknown people. The schoolyard is used as a supply base for providing the people with food and water – of course there are many people there disoriented and helpless. When Mirai wants to show the stained glass windows of the school’s chapel to Yuuki, she meets a schoolmate there…

So, here’s episode 2 of Spice and Wolf II, where Horo talks in her awesomely cute way, Nora doesn’t show up, and Lelouch annoys everyone by screaming, “FOR NUNALLY” at the end of every sentence he utters. It’s like, come on, dude. Get over it already. Your maid didn’t really mean to spill hot chocolate all over your Nunally dakimakura. It was a complete accident, so quit your whining. And besides, you’re pretending to be a merchant, so you should be able to find a replacement pretty easily. And as “Lawrence” continues his search for the “Legends of the Northern Lands”, he stumbles across a bunch of people doing some stuff that is actually not that shocking. Words are exchanged, stories are told, and then more words are exchanged. Because they’re talking to each other. And talking. And then Lawrence/Lelouch runs.  Presumably toward a store that is rumored to be selling Nunally dakimakuras.  Because he’s a weirdo.

Due to all the hate discussions regarding poor Mirai I have to intervene prominently here to take up the cudgels for her.
Is she grumpy? Yes.
Is the way she sees others around her unfair? Correct.
Does she treat her brother badly? Indeed.
But does she really mean all that? Not at all!
Look, she’s a real teenager – she likely figured out by now that her parents aren’t the god-like creatures she thought they would be. That’s a big deal and not something you just swallow that easily. Now they are in that horrible situation where she simply is overburdened and she has to rely on a grown-up she normally would distrust instantly.
Is that logical behaviour? No!
But she isn’t a Vulcan , she’s just a teenager!

Anyway – in this episode Mirai once again has a hard time, at first because she was too shy to say that she has to go to the restroom somewhere; then of course the “portable toilette” doesn’t make it better… One leads to the other until…

With this episode, another series comes to an end.  Although I gave a negative review against this series in my last post, the show is still fun to watch, and fun to work.   We’ve all heard by now that the sequel is announced unofficially.  When that happens, I’ll be here again, sharing the fun with everyone.  Until then… bye-bye, Ippo fans.  (No, I’m not going anywhere in the mean time though)
