This probably is one of the most boring episode of the series. Except for you musicologists and hardcore fans and classical musicians. See after the jump what kind of topics Chiaki and Nodame talk about.

- Chopin’s Piano Sonata No. 3 in B minor – Nodame, Chiaki and Auclair talk about this piece
- George Sand – Chopin’s romantic partner between 1837-1847. Yes, she’s a woman despite the name. ”George Sand” was her pseudonym.
- Tempo Rubato – a technique of intentionally changing the tempo while performing a piece to produce dramatic effect
- Arpeggio – broken chords
- Counterpart – musical term that’s often used in Japanese to mean polyphony.
- Beethoven’s Sonata Pathetique (Sonata No. 8 in C minor, Op. 13) – The first very successful piano sonata by Beethoven.
- Beethoven’s Sonata Apassionata (Sonata No. 23 in F minor, Op. 57) – mentioned twice in this episode. (The fate motif are used in the bridge between development and recapitulation, then again in the bridge between two sections of coda.)
- Sonata form – Chiaki dissected Beethoven’s No. 31 using terms discussed in this wikipedia article. So did I.
- Beethoven’s fate motif – the very famous opening sequence of his 5th symphony. Also heard in many different places in his compositions, as discussed in the episode
- Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 5 in C minor, Op. 10 No. 1 – One of Beethoven’s earlier pieces that features the fate motif. (3rd movement, measures 55-57)
- Beethoven’s 9th Symphony – mentioned briefly during the discussion of Sonata No. 31. These are both pieces written toward the end of his life.
- Discussion of the length of development sections in Beethoven’s sonatas – in pieces like Pathetique and Apassionata, the development section spans pages after pages. In the edition that Nodame uses, they are 1.5 pages and 4 pages respectably. In Sonata No. 31, it only lasts less than a page – the first 5 lines shown at 15:20 is the entirety of its development section. The last line is already the beginning of recapitulation.
- Futogi Kazuyo’s Rose and Plutonium – a fictitious manga that Nodame apparently has read. Don’t bother looking for it – it doesn’t exist.

isnt it Sebastiano Vieira not Viella?

Sebastiano Vieira is correct, as you can see on MyAnimeList (http://myanimelist.net/character.php?id=17227) or Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nodame_Cantabile_characters)
You should never consider neither of those sources as the official source, especially for popular culture materials. Both are user contributed data. Someone had make some kind of guess at some point. His name has been spelled in quite a few different ways throughout the series, including Viera and Vierra and Vieira. Yes, I’ve seen all those spellings in the raw, or in manga. I’ve used Viera in the past too. Partly inspired by the line of HD TV by Panasonic… But more reason goes to Viera being the Italian surname, where Vieira is used in other locales.
But when the first mention of his name in this series was that giant poster shown so big on the screen, we felt the need to switch to their spelling. Of course, I’ll be pissed if they switch the spelling again.
Sylf I think you were thinking in Japanese with a double-negative re: “never consider neither of those sources”
My 2 cents.
I think that’s an inside joke by the author who enjoys using popular soccer players’ names for music-related characters or events (e.g. the Deschamps orchestra, the Maradona competition… I was quite surprise seeing in episode 6 that Chiaki was going to see in his trip to Italy the popular director Chiellini, he’s a very young soccer player!)… So I guess the right transliteration for Chiaki’s sensei should be Vieira. ^^

I noticed that trend somewhat, as I try googling those names as I translate them, to have best possible spelling options. And I’ve seen those wikipedia pages in process. Then I just dismissed that notion, thinking maybe those are all common names in those countries. Look at name like Valdez/Valdes – so many people listed. Some of those are indeed football players.
I’m italian, and I can tell you that Vieira is not really an italian surname, for Viella “it might be”. My best guess is that we are facing some “Engrish” italian version, so “Italiangrish” from the author of the anime.
As you said, there’s a poster showing the real name (like Selty in a chat in Durarara!!) so it’s ofc the best choice to stick with it.
