Project Status
April 14th, 2009 by Sylf
I saw a big excitement among the team members and fans following the release of Eden of the East. Also came was a flood of question – is this project done, what about that? This is what’s going on:
- K-On: This is getting close to releases, and should be out within next couple of days. We plan on making two releases – low resolution, full screen version, and wide screen, high resolution version. High resolution version will trail the low res one by about 3 weeks.
- Ristorante Paradiso: This is in progress as well. This one is a bit behind the other two.
- RideBack episode 12: This is also close being done. This should be out by this weekend.
- Lupin vs Conan special: Quality checkers are now hard at work, squishing all bugs and errors. I’m going to risk and say this will be out by the end of the month.
- Gosenzosama Banbanzai: We have full intention of continuing with this project. But no further translation has been completed as of yet. (I think episode 5 is partially done.) This will be out when it’s ready.
- Black Jack: Episode 46 is nearing release. No work has been done on episodes 47 and on, but we’ve secured next 3 volumes of DVDs. We also are finalizing renewed and dedicated group for this project. I hope that the pace will pick up.
- Nodame Cantabile Paris Chapter: The team now wants to release the rest of the episodes in one go. Episode 6 is done. Episodes 7 through 9 are almost done. Translation for episodes 10 and 11 are done. This will definitely be out by End of May.
- Yoshimune: Next couple of episodes have been translated. This was always a side project for all parties involved, so this will continue to move slow.
- Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto – Natsu no Sora: Ureshii and A-Kraze are still working on it. That’s all the information I have of this one.
- Charady’s Daily Joke: I give you a fair warning—we won’t be releasing episode 12 for the time being. We’ve looked everywhere, but we can’t find the source video. We are continuing our work with episodes 13 and up. I’ve just been told that we now have the source for episode 12. We may release some episodes out of order, but they will come. Now I’ve been told that the raw file they found was corrupt. We’ll be searching for it again…
- Candy Boy episode 7: The production team has not announced the release date of this episode yet. As soon as I hear a news on this, I’ll relay the message here.
- Skip Beat: Ureshii and Yoroshiku are planning to finish up to episode 12 before dropping the project.
As for the question about those shows licensed by Crunchy Roll – the group consensus was that their quality really warrant a better version by fansubbers. It wasn’t really because of our hate toward their business practice or anything else. Also, Frostii is different from Froth-Bite. We may not drop licensed shows. We’ll decide on them on case-by-case basis.
Any other questions?

Candy Boy? wasn’t there one episode left? that’s sad that there are only so few episodes for that series.
Thanks very much for the update on things, I’m sure it’s very reassuring to the people following your releases.
Appreciate it!
you’re my hero bringing me all i could wish for Sylf… Thats why i luv u <3 and the rest of the gang too

Thanks for the updates. Are there any plans to release the widescreen versions of K-On when the widescreen episodes start airing later this month?
In case you don’t know:
Ristorante Paradiso is officially licensed to crunchyroll.com
http://www.crunchyroll.com/showseriesmedia?id=17293
“K-On and Sengoku Basara: These are getting close to releases, and should be out within next couple of days.”
– Was thinking about watch this one. Thanks for the heads up.
“Ristorante Paradiso: This is in progress as well. This one is a bit behind the other two.”
– Was thinking about watching this. So I guess it’s pretty good news.
“RideBack episode 12: This is also close being done. This should be out by this weekend.”
– Great news indeed.
“Charady’s Daily Joke: I give you a fair warning—we won’t be releasing episode 12 for the time being. We’ve looked everywhere, but we can’t find the source video. We are continuing our work with episodes 13 and up.”
– Eek. That’s bad news. What happened to episode 12?
Re: Candy Boy – oops. I forgot that one. I updated the post with that stutus. I also updated info on K-On.
I love you all guys, thank you very much for the info
Hoping to see more Natsu no Sora in the future.
Just hope you guys don’t go taking too many projects on and overwhelm yourselves.
Yay for gosenzosama banbanzai!!
Anidb listed this as being dropped for ureshii so naturally I feared for the worst. Please take all the time you need on it because chances are nobody will release it in, well, ever…
<3 you.
Ristorante Paradiso? That already being release on Crunchyroll. Is there a reason a fansub group should do this?
Thanks for the Nodame info. Just a quick question about K-On! though: why do a proper 16:9 version using the BS-TBS (BS-i) as a source? Previous TBS titles aired this way show that it’ll be an even worse mess when it comes to video quality. Why not just skip the WS airing altogether and wait for the Blu-ray releases starting at the end of July?
Wow! Thanks for the Project Status announcement, looking forward to the K-ON! release as well as the RideBack finale. I’m glad to see Nodame Paris-hen is still going on & Skip Beat! too. Just one question though, about Skip Beat, are you going to finish the whole series now or only filling the gap?
I’m glad you guys are doing Ristorante Paradiso. Definitely looking forward to it.. thought no one was going to pick it up. Didn’t know you guys were picking up K-ON too!
@thatoneman – I’m sure many people feel the sentiment that CrunchyRoll taking fansubbers hours and hours of tedious work and profiting over $50,000/mo on hundreds of different people who’ve worked on hundreds of different products and getting absolutely nothing for it, nor being asked for permission, is reason enough for some people to boycott it. CR also got $1.6m (yes, that’s millions) in venture capital funding, also profiting off of the collective work of hundreds of fansubbers who receive nothing for it.
If they claim they’re doing it “for the fans”, they’re using an extremely aggressive and fascist way of “helping the anime industry”. Normal companies seek out licensing and permission and would stream and charge legitimacy, instead of forcing anime companies into submission with mass-produced piracy ;3
Anyways I hate CR ^_^ Hulu streams videos legitimately, you know, with licensing, to ensure that people get paid for the stuff, instead of selfishly pocketing the money for themselves.
@thatoneman
Well, I prefer fansub than CR because many of their streaming animes didn’t have good quality (see their 480p’s Naruto, it still had glitch). Other reason, like me and maybe others (non-American), I can’t watch Ristorante because of license stuff
I thought Skip Beat has been licensed?
I made another update; this time, regarding Skip Beat and Crunchy Roll.
Please don’t wait for Blu-Ray for K-ON. I’ve held off on DLing any other versions because I’d heard Frostii would be subbing it. I can’t speak for everyone, but I’d rather see reasonable-quality SD versions now than super-HQ-BD 4 months from now. Even if the raw quality isn’t the greatest, I’m sure it’ll be good enough — everyone’s just spoiled by HD these days.
Bummer about Skip Beat. I actually got drawn into an Shoujo anime, so naturally it was dropped by everyone. Do you know of anyone who’s planning to finish it up?
@Ooh – your info is a little old. Yes, Crunchyroll did operate like that (offering subscriptions to be able to watch streamed fansubs you could download for free) and at that time, they were pretty much the bane of the fansub community, along with other similar models like Naruto-specific sites. However, since January this year, they’ve become a legitimate licensing site, streaming zero-hour productions with the full authority of the animating studios and Japanese television stations that are airing them. So no, they aren’t “stealing” from fansubbers (though the idea that they could do that anyway is preposterous) and yes, they’re as legitimate as a licensor as companies like Funimation and ADV etc.
So yeah, your argument against Crunchyroll is pretty ignorant. However, let’s just say that arguments about CR have divided fansubbers and leechers alike, even within single groups. It’s still a pretty contentious matter.
@FalseDawn – It’s not ignorant; I’m aware CR changed. However I don’t endorse “the ends justify the means” mentality. If someone had to steal from people to build a business that later became legitimate, are you suggesting that it’s okay? Basically whatever crimes a company commits, as long as they later turn good, it should just be ignored?
Why couldn’t they just get the licensing properly from the get-go? Why not operate like normal businesses, raise venture capital, get PR, market, establish connections, and do things without breaking the law?
So no, I don’t consider myself “pretty ignorant”.
And before you say “well fansubbing is illegal”, it’s an entirely different story in the sense that fansubbers do not get compensation for their work, and given the amount of money CR was generating, the moral ramifications are much much steeper.
Well…
Rideback : nice to hear the final episode will be released by the end of the week ! Since I’m holidays starting from Friday, the timing couldn’t have been better ! Thank you so much for your wonderful work on this wonderful series !
K-ON : any show broadcasted on BSi (thanks for the HD broadcast) from Kyoto Animation is definitely worth watching in my opinion. I’ll give it a go… and I don’t really care for the 3 weeks delay for HD. I mean, it’s even better this way for me. :p
Frostii : definitely one of the best fansub team ever. Thank you so much for all those shows you’ve subbed so far, and will keep on subbing from now on ! You rock ^^
Oh my god! All great news!
Thanks for your subbing as always ^^ You guys do such a great job! I luck out because the anime series are usually the types I enjoy. Thanks again TT
-Higashi no Eden (looks like it might be really good)
-Skip Beat (thanks for subbing this till episode 12 for continuity before the official subs starts)
-Gosenzosama Banbanzai (patiently awaits)
-Ristorante Paradiso (I was a little sad about this one. I thought no one will pick it up because of the lack of young people featured. I am so glad your guys did because it seems rather funny actually)
-Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto – Natsu no Sora (Looking forward to the end)
-Charady’s Daily Joke (This is really cute)
-RideBack (Last one! Yay)
sad to see Skip Beat go. Good to hear that Mahou Tsukai Natsu no Sora is still going ^_^. Any news on the rest of the H2O DVDs?
sucks that you dropped Skip Beat, now i can only use shitty CR rips.
Going to wait until it is on dvd and buy it, which will take months and months…
Thanks for Ristorante Paradiso.
I have to say, I’ve been a long time leecher of Frostii (and its preceding groups) but I am very disappointed in the fact you will continue to sub licensed shows and even shows available on Crunchyroll. I thought you guys had more class than that, especially you, Sylf.
Seems like all ethics of fansubbing are gone, nobody left who gives a damn about supporting the industry. Makes this leecher sad.
Jordan, you ingrate. Do continuity and quality mean nothing? Don’t you dare sneer at the people working hard for the enjoyment of fellow fans and little reward other than the satisfaction of having shared something they like. Should they abandon those who have come to depend on them and throw away all the work that has already gone into projects the instant word of licensing suddenly comes down the line?
No one is stopping you or anyone from “supporting the industry.” Buy DVDs, throw money at the licensing companies that are doing for profit what fansubbers do out of love, and go bookmark sites like Crunchyroll that only exist because of fansubbing. But don’t call yourself a leecher and condemn the ethics of people who actually give a little back in the same breath. Shame on you.
Not to make too much of a point of this, but:
“Should they abandon those who have come to depend on them and throw away all the work that has already gone into projects the instant word of licensing suddenly comes down the line?”
Ideally, yes. There’s an idea out there that fansubbing is around “to popularize titles to Western audiences”, but if that was the case, a lot more groups would drop when projects were licensed. There really is no argument for continuing a project if you use that philosophy to justify your group’s existence. And as for the “people who depend on them” – let’s face it, they’re all essentially freeloaders anyway. Not condemning their “dependency” (though lol’ing at it a bit), just saying. I’m a freeloader too – that’s what fansubbing is all about, isn’t it?
And the ethics debate will always rage on, dizzle83, especially with the advent of Crunchyroll. Personally, I can argue both sides of the coin pretty well, and while Jordan’s approach may be quite brash, they are actually thoughts echoed by other fansubbers in varying amounts.
So, don’t think we’re going to let ourselves be steamrollered by unhappy leechers. Seriously, we’d never get anything out if we weren’t immune to leecher opinion
YAY more black jack.
Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!… …Thank You So Very Much About Skip Beat News… Really, Truly, Deeply Felt Gratitude For Your Time And Dedication To This Series From This Fan Of Your Amazing Work!
Also Much, Much Appreciation For Your Continued Efforts With Black Jack…. You Are Definitely Among The Best Fansbbers Out There, No Doubt About It!… Please Keep Up The Great Work.
Just so you know though, FalseDawn, I have nothing against FUNimation’s subs of FMA: Brotherhood. I think it’s kind of silly that SHS is pushing it. It’s just different that one company steals and profits off of other people’s work and another group goes through legitimate business transactions to get the job done, that’s all.
Sorry to double-post but my first attempt seems to have gotten lost in the ether somehow.
Is Frostii planning on doing ep 04 of the Tales of Symphonia OVA (a former Ureshii project)? I’m not asking for a time-frame, just a yes/no on whether you are planning to do it. Thanks for all your great subs!
In fansubwiki.com (summer 2009) has been wrote your interest for Spice and Wolf II.
Is this true?
Do you also plan the releasing act 0 oav?
Thank you
[...] Yoshimune – No progress since the last status update. The project lead for Yoshimune just poked me today about the status on the latest episode, so [...]
So whatever happened to the Lupin V. Conan special? No one seems to have heard anything in quite a while.
Hey ima curious if ya gonna sub the Ex2 (8th episode) of Candy Boy? And if ya gonna sub could ya tell when?
Frostii:
Is the Lupin v Conan hardsub out? I tried one I found the other day but the subs were horrible. Hoping your project is complete, and I just can’t find it.
Thanks!
I desperatelly need for a seed on Gosenzosama.
I’ve been stuck at 92% for some months now. Thanks to whoever might help me.
If you haven’t switched to the batch torrent, switch now. It’ll help you.
nice project..and successful
